Matthews Landscape: what changed, and what it took.

Matthews Landscape is an owner-led landscaping company. The drive was there and the work was getting done, but nobody could say cleanly who owned what, or exactly where the company was headed.

Garrett Matthews, Matthews Landscape

The challenge

The owner was sitting in more seats than anyone had realized. Multiple people wore multiple hats, and that overlap turned into confusion: unclear roles, blurred lines, and no shared picture of the destination. This is a Direction problem first, when the vision and the org aren't defined, every department starts pulling slightly differently, and the owner becomes the only thing holding it together.

What changed

The work put names to seats and clarity to roles, then drew clean lines around who was responsible for what. With the structure in place, the company could finally see its own operation honestly, the problems heading its way and the wins about to land, instead of reacting to whatever hit first. The data moved out of people's heads and onto the table, in plain sight.

The result

What had been a tangle of overlapping hats became organization, clarity, and defined direction. The team gained the ability to see trouble coming before it became a crisis, and to see victories before they arrived, everything laid out, as they put it, in black and white.

In their own words: "We are able to see problems coming at us before they ever become a big issue and we are able to see our victories before they even come. Everything is right there in front of you, black and white.", Garrett Matthews, Owner, Matthews Landscape
