Who Michael works best with

Let's save us both some time. Michael isn't for every owner. He's for the one running a real, growing company who flat-out refuses to trade their family and their life to get to the next level, and is right not to.

He works best with owners of $10M, $20M, $50M-and-up companies who are good at this and have hit the wall that shows up when growth outpaces structure. Michael has stood exactly where you are. He and his brother set out to grow their family's company well past two locations and 50 employees, and they were dead set on doing it without torching what mattered most. So he knows the specific weight of a company that's climbing fast: the cash pressure, the operational constraints, the way every new win lights three new fires. And he'll tell you up front, it does not break by working more hours. You've already tried that.

You're my kind of client if:

You're Michael's kind of client if:

  • You're scaling a real company, $10M and climbing toward $20M, $50M, and beyond, with a team and real revenue, and the growth has gotten heavier, not easier.
  • You're carrying the weight of ownership personally, family business, partner, sibling, and you can feel the structure underneath the company buckling under the growth on top of it.
  • You're convinced (or you want to be) that scaling the business and protecting your life are not a trade, and you're done being told otherwise.
  • You'd rather learn from someone who actually sat in the chair, scaled the company, and got out clean, not a theorist with a binder.
How Michael coaches

Most owners try to fix a growing company by pushing harder. Michael does the opposite, and it's the only thing that actually works: put the right structure and the right leaders underneath the growth, so the business carries more weight without cracking, and stops running you into the ground.

He didn't learn this from a book. He learned it the way that sticks, by living it. When his family's company hit a serious growth phase, Michael led the self-implementation of a business operating system himself: structure, accountability, clarity, installed into an organization scaling fast. Within 12 to 18 months the benefits were measurable. Then he and his brother brought in Exit Momentum for advanced strategy and leadership development, and the thing took off, $25 million to a peak of $80 million, two locations to six, a manufacturing arm added, and a strategic acquisition to close it out. Michael ran the exact playbook he now coaches. So when he teaches it, it isn't theory. It's a receipt.

But here's the part that actually drives him. Somewhere in all that scaling, Michael figured out that the growth metrics weren't the thing, developing the people inside the business was. Through every phase, he stayed locked on building leaders who could sustain the growth once it landed. That's the whole difference between a company that spikes and a company that holds. Most owners never make that distinction. Michael built his entire second act on it.

The whole model, every coach: every EXM coach works the full 3D Momentum Model: Direction, Design, and Dynamic. Michael goes deepest at the seam between systems and leaders: the structure and the people that let a company keep scaling. See the 3D Momentum Model →

Michael's background

Michael didn't learn how to scale a business in a classroom. He learned it on the floor of his family's lumber yard, and then by driving the company through the hardest, fastest stretch in its history.

His business education started long before college. He watched his father take customer calls late into the evening and learned, first-hand, what ownership actually demands. By junior high he was loading trucks and running deliveries at the family lumber yard, picking up the things that never show up on a spreadsheet: reliability, service, follow-through. Through high school and college he got the wide-angle view, how sales, operations, and finance have to line up to keep customers and sustain growth.

After graduating in 2003, Michael felt called back to the family business, straight into the financial pressure and operational constraints that define a growing company. Alongside his brother, he started mapping an ambitious expansion: grow well past two locations and 50 employees, without sacrificing the one thing that mattered most, family. When the company hit its growth phase, he led the self-implementation of EOS®, structure, accountability, clarity, installed. Then the brothers brought in Exit Momentum to accelerate. The results compounded fast.

Third-generation family business owner, grew up in the business and came back to lead it.

Scaled the company from $25M to a peak of $80M in revenue, roughly 3x, expanding from 2 to 6 locations and adding a manufacturing division.

Self-implemented EOS®, establishing execution discipline and operational clarity in the middle of rapid growth, then brought in Exit Momentum to pour gas on it.

Completed a strategic acquisition in 2024, when the company was acquired by another third-generation family business, a real, clean exit, not a story he tells.

Client-turned-coach, Michael lived the EXM method as a client before he ever joined as a coach, so he teaches it from the inside out.

Questions people ask about Michael

Straight answers.

Who does Michael Townsend work best with?
Owners of $10M–$50M+ companies who are good at what they do but have hit the strain that comes when growth outpaces structure, especially family-business owners, partners, and operators who want to scale without sacrificing the life behind the business. Michael's specialty is the seam between systems and people: building the operating structure that makes growth repeatable, and developing the leaders who can sustain it. Industry matters far less to him than whether the owner is ready to build both.
What makes Michael different from other coaches?
He's a client-turned-coach who has actually lived the work. Before joining Exit Momentum as a coach, Michael was an EXM client who scaled his family's third-generation business from $25 million to a peak of $80 million, grew from two to six locations, added a manufacturing division, and completed a strategic acquisition in 2024. He teaches the method from the inside out, because he ran it himself before he ever coached it.
Where is Michael based, and who can he coach?
Michael is based in Dothan, AL, and works with clients across the Eastern US. Coaching is done in a rhythm that fits a busy owner's schedule, so location isn't a barrier.
What framework does Michael use?
EXM's 3D Momentum Model, a triangle of Direction, Design, and Dynamic that all have to hold. Michael is strongest across the Design side (the systems, cadence, and accountability of a real operating system, he self-implemented EOS® in his own company) and the Dynamic side (developing the leaders who sustain the growth, which he calls the most fulfilling part of the work). Inside the Lab, he pressure-tests people, purpose, process, and performance through that 3D lens.
Does Michael understand family-business dynamics?
Deeply, he lived them. Michael grew up in a third-generation family business, came back to it after college in 2003, and built its biggest growth chapter alongside his brother, all the way through a strategic acquisition by another third-generation family business in 2024. Generational transition, sibling/partner leadership, and exit planning aren't abstractions to him.
What happens on the first call?
A straight, no-pressure conversation about where your business is, where you want to take it, and whether Michael is the right coach for the job. If he's not a fit, he'll tell you. If he is, he'll walk you through how he'd approach your situation, starting with the 3D Diagnostic.

If any of this is hitting close to home, let's talk.

The owners Michael works with are usually doing the work only they can do, because the business still runs straight through them. That's the real ceiling, and it does not break by working harder.
